What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient, natural, holistic treatment for many diseases, conditions and pain. It encourages natural healing, improves mood and energy, reduces or relieves pain and improves function and movement of the body.

It is the most common form of Traditional Chinese Medicine practiced in the West.

The treatment involves the insertion of very slender, flexible needles at specific points on the body. They slide into the skin smoothly, rarely causing more than a brief moment of slight discomfort.

For those who are needle phobic, or for whom acupuncture is contraindicated, it is still possible for the acupuncturist to stimulate the specific acupuncture points on the body. They will use pressure applied with their hands, fingers, an acupressure tool or a cold laser.

Conditions Acupuncture May Treat

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Acupuncture can be beneficial for the treatment of many conditions such as:

  • Pain including headaches, back, neck and joint pain
  • Sciatica, arthritis, sprains and strains
  • Allergies, asthma, sinusitis
  • Mood disorders, depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress
  • Digestive issues, IBS, GERD, gastritis, nausea, vomiting
  • Hormonal Imbalance, fertility
  • Reduce reactions to medications, radiotherapy, chemotherapy
  • Prenatal – morning sickness, breach baby, pain, inducing labour
  • And can also boost the immune system

How Does It Work?

The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory of meridians states that Qi (vital energy) circulates in the body through a system of meridian channels, connecting internal organs with external organs and tissues.

TCM identifies as many as 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body; with each point having a different effect on the Qi that passes through it.

Stimulation of these specific localities of the body using needles or pressure encourages Qi to flow efficiently throughout the whole body. This allows the body to function more optimally and effectively treats disease, disorder, pain, and many other conditions.

From a Western perspective, it has been shown that Acupuncture stimulates nerve endings, muscles and connective tissue. This stimulation causes a release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Science indicates that Acupuncture points are often located where a nerve enters a muscle, and studies have shown that points along meridians stimulate particular areas or lobes of the brain.

Who Can Provide Acupuncture?

To receive Acupuncture in Ottawa you must be treated by a registered provider. That could be an Acupuncturist, a Chiropractor or Massage Therapist with the appropriate training or a Physiotherapist. A few medical doctors will also offer Acupuncture.

For Acupressure or Laser Acupuncture, the provider does not have to be licensed, however, you should always determine their level of training.

Is Acupuncture Covered on Insurance?

This varies depending on your individual plan. Many plans do specifically cover Acupuncture by a Registered Acupuncturist, RAc or Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner, R.TCMP.

As of July 2023, acupuncture is covered for all government employees with extended health benefits.

When performed by a Chiropractor or Massage Therapist it is covered under that modality. If you require insurance coverage, it is recommended that you check with your insurance provider to be sure that they will pay for your treatment.
