6 Typical Things To Expect After an Ottawa Osteopathic Treatment

Are you curious about what to expect after osteopathic treatment?

Or have you recently been for osteopathic treatment from one of our Ottawa Osteopathy team, and you are not sure if how you feel is typical?

Either way, you are in the right place.

Today I am going to talk about six typical things to expect after an Ottawa osteopathic treatment?

Let’s jump in.

The primary purpose of osteopathic treatment is to put your body back into a position to heal itself.

Our Ottawa Osteopaths achieve this by reestablishing proper function in your joints and muscles.

Our body heals itself through our immune system.

Essentially an osteopathic treatment wakes up our immune system.

Once woken, our immune system will begin repairing our body.

The primary process of repair in the body is inflammation.

Most people see inflammation as harmful, but it is a critical part of the healing process.

1. Heat, Redness and Swelling

There are three main signs of inflammation: heat, redness and swelling.

Therefore following an osteopathic treatment, it is very often to feel some heat, redness and swelling in and around the joints and muscles.

These feelings will usually first appear the morning after the day of the treatment.

The heat, redness and swelling may persist but should disappear within 3-4 days.

To help reduce these feelings, you may consider using a cold pack over the most affected areas.

2. Stiffness

Along with the above symptoms, you may also experience some stiffness in your joints and muscles.

Stiffness is a common effect of inflammation.

You will usually experience stiffness in the morning and after being inactive.

To help reduce stiffness, you may consider taking an Epsom salt bath at bedtime.

3. Fatigue

To produce inflammation requires the use of a significant amount of energy by the body.

As such, you may experience days of fatigue following osteopathic treatment.

Be sure to listen to your body and rest when you feel tired.

To help reduce fatigue, make sure you eat regularly, drink plenty of water and get plenty of restful sleep.

4. Emotions

As well as physical feelings, you may also experience the release of emotions after osteopathic treatment.

Our bodies often store the emotional effects of physical and emotional trauma in our joints and muscles.

By loosening joints and relaxing muscles during osteopathic treatment, you may experience different emotions.

Some people have reported bursting into tears for no apparent reason following osteopathic treatment.

If you have experienced any significant physical or emotional trauma in your past, you may consider scheduling a session with your therapist following osteopathic treatment.

5. Vivid Dreams

Emotions may also take the form of lucid, emotionally charged dreams following osteopathic treatment.

Again this normal and should occur for a couple of nights only.

6. Other Symptoms

You may experience other bodily symptoms following osteopathic treatment.

Such symptoms may include headaches or diarrhea or increased bowel motions.

Again these are normal and should resolve within one or two days.

Lastly, if you are unsure or concerned about anything you feel following an osteopathic treatment, you should contact your osteopathic manual practitioner.
