Jennifer Valiquette’s Journey Towards Spinal Flow Care

Jennifer graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Ottawa in 1996. Her early career was spent working with clients admitted to hospital with complex mental health issues like depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, and schizophrenia. This is when she started to specialize in trauma related to violence and abuse, spending many years working with clients with Eating Disorders.

Witnessing first-hand the capacity for healing often years after a traumatic event, Jennifer moved from Ottawa to the Ottawa Valley to manage a rural Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Centre. Her goal as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner was to support victims of violence at the earliest possible stage post traumatic event, in order to prevent mental health sequela from developing.

Jennifer’s focus in the care of trauma survivors shifted towards nervous system regulation, influenced by the work of trauma experts Dr. Peter Levine and Dr.Gabor Maté.

Dr. Peter Levine’s work is centred on his observations that trauma is not just a psychological issue but it becomes trapped in the nervous system. A goal in treatment is to gently move from activation (stress) to regulation (safety).

Dr. Gabor Maté’s approach to trauma is compassionate, holistic and deeply rooted in the connection between mind and body. He emphasizes the inseparable link between emotional and physical health, arguing that chronic illness is often rooted in unhealed emotional trauma and that addictions are a response to emotional pain. True healing comes when people feel safe, seen and connected, and can begin to reclaim their authentic selves.

Jennifer’s exploration for a holistic, gentle and effective modality that could be used as an adjunct to therapy, enable the regulation of the nervous system, as well as promote deeper healing from trauma and accompanying physical health conditions, led her to the Spinal Flow Technique.

After completing her certification program in the Spinal Flow Technique in 2023 Jennifer opened a holistic wellness centre named Silver Birch Place, in Arnprior, ON in March 2024. She has proven success in treating a variety of health issues including whiplash, concussion, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, digestive issues, anxiety, complex PTSD, trauma, depression and more.

Jennifer Valiquette is a founding member of the Ottawa Spinal Flow Collaborative, a group of Spinal Flow Practitioners working together to further awareness and access to Spinal Flow care in the Ottawa region. Jennifer is excited to be offering Spinal Flow sessions at the Complete Wellbeing Centre.
